Read
Some book recommendations from my sojourn:
-- The Jennifer Morgue by Charles Stross, particularly for
mysterycult: it's roughly equal measures James Bond, X-Files and the IT Crowd. Yes, you read that right.
-- A Short History Of Islam by Karen Armstrong; it is short indeed at under 200 pages but informative if a bit dry towards the end. Still, if you want a rough overview of where Islam is at and what the historical and philosophical differences are between Sunni and Shiite this is a good, quick read.
-- The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell; I can't recommend this highly enough. Alien life is discovered near Alpha Centauri. While the UN dithers, it's the Jesuits who send the first contact mission. It's a sort of heartbreaking suspense flashback mystery thing.
