Shouldn't we be on 128 bit by now? It's the 20th century already or something.

Yeah, wasn't the Jaguar 64 bit? And that came out in '93!

I ran Vista 64-bit for several months. Honestly it worked pretty well. The disadvantage is that very few applications actually take advantage of the 64-bit architecture. So I didn't see much of a difference.

I'm running Vista 64 bit on my work computer and haven't had any problems whatsoever with it (cue the computer exploding). I like it, but I'm not sure how big a selling poitn that is.

Are you currently on Vista 32 bit or on XP?

I'm scoping out a new home-build machine. There are several articles out there that say "don't get 64, nothing is compatible" but they are all a few years old. I think that considering that I want to do some casual gaming, I should probably plump for 32bit to make sure that the games will run, which seems like a ridiculous situation to be in when 64-bit processors have been around for some time now.

I don't do gaming, so I've no experience. I'd guess that you should just check the dates of the articles compared to the dates of service pack releases. There are loads of articles basically saying "don't use Vista ever" that were written before SP1 that aren't at all relevant now.

There should be someone at work who'll know (at least I hope so!) but if the people sitting around my desk don't have the answer, it would probably take some digging to find out the right person to ask, and that wouldn't be very high on my priorities list.

Just asked one of the guys at work (who has Vista as one of specilist areas) about this. He said that hardware is usually the problem. If you go for the bottom end of the "Vista capable" hardware, it's not going to cope. If you get hardware that's able to support all Vista features, you'll be fine. But check the drivers for the hardware you're planning on getting. If the graphics and soundcard drivers are 64 bit compatible, the games shouldn't cause any problem.

Hopefully I'm translating the message right - Vista is not my area of expertise. If you have any questions on SharePoint Business Process Management however, I'm your girl!

Thanks. I eventually plumped for 32bit, simply because that was the one ebuyer actually had in stock!

I'm interested to find out the answer to this as well. Granted, I can't afford more than 3Gb of RAM atm, but I'd like to know the options.

My plan is to start with 2gb and go on from there. Honestly, how many things are you ever going to do that need more?
