It's just struck me that Livejournal attempt to charge you for the privilege of blogging, whereas Blogger, if you set up Adsense ads on it, will actually pay you for blogging.

Interesting that both business models work.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is wrong - I realize this is a popular trope.

Specifically, cheese straws should be made with self-raising flour, not plain flour, and with roughly grated cheese (50-50 red leicester and strong cheddar works well) nor finely grated cheese. If you do it how he recommends, you end up with oblongs of dense, flat pastry. Do it my [sister's] way, and you get light, fluffy straws with nobbles of melted cheese throughout. Lovely.

Strathclyde Police have 10 Jedi in their number. However, according to the article there are 390,000 Jedi in a UK population of ~65m people, which is an incidence of about 0.5% - Strathclyde Police have 8000 officers, so having only 10 Jedi is 0.125% - clearly, they need to recruit more Jedi to better reflect the people they are policing :)

The crash in the value of the pound may help my overseas sales of randomviolence (I've had two so far, ever) - I've raised the price to £20 from £15, but in euros and dollars I can still actually reduce the price a little bit from when I last set them (more than a year ago).

There is a new version - of course, always a new version - now sold in a shiny A3 plastic folder with A3 full-colour maps, photorealistic character art, totally revamped equipment artwork, new missions and a new 2-player campaign. You can see some lo-res artworks here: http://www.randomviolence.net/images/ingame

Read

Some book recommendations from my sojourn:

-- The Jennifer Morgue by Charles Stross, particularly for mysterycult: it's roughly equal measures James Bond, X-Files and the IT Crowd. Yes, you read that right.

-- A Short History Of Islam by Karen Armstrong; it is short indeed at under 200 pages but informative if a bit dry towards the end. Still, if you want a rough overview of where Islam is at and what the historical and philosophical differences are between Sunni and Shiite this is a good, quick read.

-- The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell; I can't recommend this highly enough. Alien life is discovered near Alpha Centauri. While the UN dithers, it's the Jesuits who send the first contact mission. It's a sort of heartbreaking suspense flashback mystery thing.
